Membership Policy

The Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Biomedical Nanotechnology Institute at the University of Miami (BioNIUM) has a formal membership application and review process. Membership is open to all members of the University of Miami community that meet the criteria and agree to the terms listed below.

Types of Association with BioNIUM: There are five types of association with BioNIUM: Member,  Trainee Member, Academic Affiliate,  Industry Affiliate, and Community Affiliate.

BioNIUM Member

Faculty & Scientists

  1. Eligibility: Membership is open to all University of Miami faculty and staff that have demonstrated an interest in nanotechnology and a desire to participate in research, educational, and outreach nanotechnology programs. Membership is contingent on the agreement of all membership responsibilities.
  2. Benefits:
  • Eligibility to receive funding for pilot and developmental projects
  • Increased opportunities for collaboration in the nanotechnology space
  • Increased opportunities for networking with industry partners, government agencies, and the NanoFL Consortium
  • Increased interactions with the University of Miami Office of Technology Transfer
  • Eligibility to nominate students and trainees for BioNIUM fellowships and travel awards
  • Eligibility to obtain BioNIUM awards
  • Eligibility to nominate BioNIUM monthly meeting speakers
  • Research proposal development assistance
  • Career development mentorship and support
  • Inclusion in BioNIUM distribution lists which keep members up to date on funding opportunities, nanotechnology news, information, etc.
  • Member profile on institute website and promotion/dissemination of members’ research updates, publications, and awards

III. Responsibilities: All BioNIUM members are expected to contribute to the mission and growth of the institute through support of BioNIUM activities. The responsibilities of membership include:

  • Willingness to work collaboratively with other educators, researchers, and scientists to further the goals of BioNIUM.
  • Active participation in BioNIUM activities, including research program group meetings, seminars, committees, and task forces.
  • Attendance at scheduled functions of BioNIUM.
  • Active participation in BioNIUM education efforts, including appropriate symposia, nanotechnology curricula for fellows, graduate students, and postdoctoral students, as well as undergraduate programs and community education.
  • Willingness to provide mentoring to junior faculty and other BioNIUM members.
  • All BioNIUM members will be responsible for providing updated research information/progress, other support, publications, CVs, and biosketches as requested, but no less than annually, in order to ensure that administration is up to date on all information needed for various reporting requirements.
  • Include BioNIUM affiliation along with primary affiliation in all abstracts and publications
  • Acknowledge Nanofabrication Core in publications, if used
  • Include the use of the Nanofabrication Core in proposals as appropriate
  • Contribute with IDCs generated by funded research to be directed to BioNIUM
  • Willingness to participate in Program, Project, and Center grants
  1. Application: To apply for membership, interested UM faculty and staff should complete our online application found here. Applicants should have a current CV in PDF format available to upload at the time of application.
  2. Selection Process: All applications are reviewed and approved by the BioNIUM’s Membership Committee and director of BioNIUM.
  3. Review of Membership: All members will subject to periodic review by BioNIUM leadership. The Committee reserves the right to rescind the membership of those members, who are  not meeting the criteria set in the BIoNIUM membership policy. Members not meeting these criteria are counseled.

BioNIUM Trainee Member

  1. Eligibility: Graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and medical students, with the approval of their supervisor
  2. Benefits:
  • Eligibility to receive BioNIUM fellowships and travel awards
  • Career development, mentorship, and support
  • Inclusion in BioNIUM distribution lists which keep members up to date on funding opportunities, nanotechnology news, information, etc.
  • Promotion/dissemination of members’ research updates, publications, and awards
  • Eligibility to nominate BioNIUM monthly meeting speakers
  1. Responsibilities:
  • Active participation in BioNIUM activities including, but not limited to, monthly meetings, research presentations, and BioNIUM outreach activities.
  • Provide updated research information/progress, other support, publications, CVs, and biosketches as requested, but no less than annually, in order to ensure that administration is up to date on all information needed for various reporting requirements.
  • Include BioNIUM affiliation along with primary affiliation in all abstracts and publications.
  • Acknowledge Nanofabrication Core in publications, if used
